Job Description

TransCore (TCI), a subsidiary of ST Engineering, is seeking an experienced Field Technician II (Fiber Optic Splicer), to join our team in Tampa, FL.

Summary: The primary responsibilities of the Technician II (Fiber Optic Splicer) is to perform fusion splicing of fiber optic cables in both outdoor and indoor settings. Read, create, and maintain splicing schematics and diagrams and maintain control of outside plant (OSP) activities surrounding the assigned work site(s). Take and maintain accurate splicing and field notes, support project timelines, and inspect, design, and provide accurate records for projects. This position requires field work which may include overtime, weekends, holidays, and out-of-normal work hours. Travel up to 50%, depending on the business needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Fusion splice fiber optic cables in both outdoor and indoor settings
  • Read, create, and maintain splicing schematics and diagrams; maintain control of outside plant (OSP) activities surrounding the assigned work site(s)
  • Take and maintain accurate splicing and field notes.
  • Support project timelines and inspect, design, and provide accurate records for projects.
  • Requires field work, which may include overtime, weekends, holidays, and out-of-normal work hours.
  • Travel up to 50%, depending on the business needs.
  • Able to splice fiber optic cables, including both loose tube and ribbon optic cables.
  • Able to construct a proper splice case, including but not limited to grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage, and sealing.
  • Able to prepare and maintain splicing records, schematics, and diagrams.

Qualifications:

  • Must successfully complete required background / drug screening that TransCore initiates as part of the hiring process; additionally, successfully complete a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and State Law Enforcement Radio System (SLERS) background screen when required by project.
  • At least 2 years' experience as a Fiber Optic Splicer
  • Must hold a valid Driver's license and be able to travel when required.
  • Must be available for Monday through Friday, 7am - 4 pm, plus on call as needed.

Desired Technical Skills & Competencies:

  • Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Certification preferred but not required.
  • Ability to read roadway plans.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications (Office/Visio)

Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
One year certificate from college or technical school preferred.

Job Complexity : Works on assignments requiring some judgment and initiative. Understands implications of work and makes recommendations for solutions.

Supervision: Normally receives little instruction on daily work, general instructions on newly introduced assignments.

Language Skills : Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability : Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to diagnose common problems and apply specified solutions.
