PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Join us in Partnering with our community to make Aurora safer every day. As a Division Chief, you will manage, plan, coordinate, and direct the day-to-day operations and activities of assigned sworn and non-sworn personnel in the Patrol, Special Operations, Investigations, or Professional Standards and Training Division under the direction of the Police Chief.

Salary for this role: $183.764.88

The Division Chief at the City of Aurora:

  • Supervises all division operations through assigned sworn and non-sworn personnel.
  • Supervises assigned employees.
  • Plans for allocation of resources and monitors and evaluates the effectiveness and efficiency of programs.
  • Develops methods and procedures to improve operations.
  • Engages in strategic and tactical problem solving and makes decisions appropriate to the level of command.
  • Reviews and approves official reports completed by assigned personnel.
  • Prepares special reports and projects at the request of the Police Chief and makes presentations.
  • Represents the department at meetings and on committees.
  • Develops and proposes policies and procedures.
  • Prepares and monitors assigned operating and capital budgets, including expenditures.
  • Assists in developing operational priorities, goals, and objectives.
  • Makes recommendations to the Chief regarding selecting, hiring, training, evaluating, and disciplining of assigned employees.
  • Collaborates with other city departments, law enforcement agencies and community partners.
  • Assumes duties of an Executive Duty Officer on a rotational basis
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in public administration, business administration, criminal justice, or a directly related field.

Experience: 

  • Seven (7) or more years of progressively responsible law enforcement or public safety administrative experience.
    • Must include three (3) years of managerial and administrative responsibility at the command level (Captain and above) in a major police department (with 800 or more authorized sworn personnel)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in public administration, business administration, criminal justice, or a directly related field.

Licenses and Certifications Required: 

  • Obtain a Valid Colorado Driver’s License and have a good driving record.
  • The Division Police Chief must possess a current Colorado POST certification and maintain a Colorado POST certification while holding the position of Division Police Chief

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, the Division Chief will be required to work as an essential employee.

Physical Demands:

  • Light physical activity with the ability to lift up to 20lbs with or without assistance.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities. Able to meet the physical requirements of POST certification.
  • Infrequent physical activity with the ability to lift up to 100lbs with or without assistance.
  • Infrequently make physical arrests requiring the need to repeatedly bend, twist, stretch, reach, lift, drag, push, grab, punch, kick, grapple, wrestle, and run for prolonged periods of time to gain control over a combative/restrictive/violent individual.
  • Continuous clear vision to read and interpret reports and other written documents.
  • Continuous speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.
  • Continuous hand/eye coordination for operation of computer keyboard, and motor vehicle under normal, emergency, and adverse conditions
  • Work environment is primarily indoors within an office setting, however, may be subject to live crime scenes or other locations which would necessitate a police response and to assess situations and make decisions. 

Equipment Used:

  • Uses standard office equipment including personal computers and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel, and menu driven databases as a part of the library automated systems.
  • This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g., vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
