Role: Network Engineer I
Location: Cincinnati/Hybrid
Type: FTE
Job Purpose
- This position will work with various departments within Core Network, OSP Planning & Engineering, VoIP Engineering, and other operations and support organizations in the planning, configuration, and implementation associated with our IP network(s).
- This position will also have responsibility for the support and repair functions, for these IP networks and any associated customer networks.
- The Network Engineer I will design and perform all network engineering functions required on all Layer 2 data services sold to Business Retail and Carrier Customers.
- The individual will manage and configure all related IP configurations for customer dedicated internet orders.
- This role has a direct impact on the customers' perception of the quality and value of our data and Internet products, as well as the operational and financial goals of Cincinnati Bell.
- The Network Engineer I will play the role of lead engineer on highly technical projects.
Essential Functions
- Perform all aspects of technical deployment projects, including an implementation plan, methods of procedures, additional technical resource identification, and execution of work.
- Engineer and configure all of the customer orders within the scope of the role, based on the accepted processes and established timeframes (OLAs).
- Work with Network Planning to manage growth and capacity plans by monitoring network performance and communicating specific capacity needs, when they arise.
- Responsible for leading in the implementation of network designs that consistently deliver performance, reliability, and scalability within the established Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Participate in on-call rotation for escalation support of technical issues, supporting the 24x7 production network environment.
- Represent Network Engineering on cross-functional product/project teams, in the development, launch, and administration of data services.
- Role as a technical resource on specific engineering projects, as deemed necessary by the business.
Experience
- 3-4 years hand's on engineering experience.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in engineering and administering IP networks.
- Previous duties as a network engineer a plus. Previous sales engineering or network design a plus.
- Previous duties as Team Leader a plus.
- Cisco Certifications such as CCNP or CCIE highly recommended.
- Extensive hands-on experience in the configuration and maintenance of routers, hubs, bridges, and switches.
- In-depth Experience with TCP/IP platforms involving dynamic routing protocols like EIGRP, OSPF, and BGP and their related control protocols.
- Practical real-world experience of heterogeneous networking components along with knowledge of routing/ switching involving VLANs, ATM, Frame relay, and optical carriers.
- Experience with Telco provisioning processes a plus.
- Project Management experience a plus. Experience using network analysis, management, and performance monitoring tools to evaluate product and service behaviors.
- Working experience with troubleshooting tools such as traceroute, dig, tcpdump/snoop, and packet analysis applications.
- Familiarity with security-related Internet information sources such as BugTraq, CERT, etc
- Experience with the configuration and administration of both Hardware and Software based Firewalls. Experience with Visio creating detailed network diagrams
Education
- Four years of College resulting in a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent job-related experience
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Expert knowledge of TCP/IP Expert knowledge of TCP/IP enhancements such as multi-cast, QOS techniques, bandwidth, and path reservation techniques.
- Working knowledge of DS3, T1, OC3, ISDN, Frame Relay, SONET, ATM, and DSL, and other bandwidth link specifications and protocols.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
