Job Description

Job Overview Primarily responsible for phlebotomy procedures. Assists in clerical duties of the department, processing specimens, and unpacking supplies. Compensation Sign-on bonus of $3,000 available. Full-time position with 72 hours every two-week pay period. Workdays Monday-Friday with variable hours. Works every 4th weekend, no holidays, and no call. Job Functions Collects venous and capillary blood specimens according to laboratory protocol. Maintains phlebotomy tray and work area to minimize exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Provides appropriate laboratory services and care to the following age groups: infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics in accordance with established standards of performance. Assists with inventory and receiving supplies. Performs clerical duties such as filing patient reports and maintaining workload statistics. Processes specimens for in-house or reference laboratory testing. Maintains interpersonal skills, initiative, and attitude. Adheres to hospital and department policies. Complies with exposure control and safety policies. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. Performs urine drug screens (certification provided). Performs breath alcohol testing and draws legal blood alcohols. Qualifications / Requirements Preparation and Training – Certification as a phlebotomist desirable; ability to be trained on the job. BLS certified for CPR. Required to attend Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training during orientation. Work Experience – Prior experience in a medical setting and basic knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology beneficial. Attendance – Punctual and regular attendance required. Employees must report on time and remain for entire schedule. Independent Judgment – Understand patient needs, prioritize draws, select best method, seek guidance from lab techs/manager as needed. Contacts with Others – Frequent contact with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and co‑workers under critical situations. Responsibility for Welfare of Others – Obtain specimens crucial to patient care while minimizing exposure to bloodborne pathogens and hazardous chemicals. Mental/Visual Effort – Must speak, read, and write English understandably. Must have adequate vision and hearing or prosthetics to perform duties. Good health and emotional stability required. Visual acuity and color perception necessary for laboratory tasks. Working Conditions – Category I exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Requires standard precautions and participation in JRMC Safety Management Program. Work may involve cramped spaces, frequent interruptions, overtime, holidays, weekends, and shifts beyond the original schedule. Other – Individual must provide own vehicle and hold a valid North Dakota driver’s license. Promotion – No formal line of promotion.
