The Editor - State News is responsible for managing and shaping state-level news coverage for the AARP Bulletin and aarp.org. In this role, the editor collaborates with freelance writers to develop engaging stories on a wide range of topics, highlighting AARP’s initiatives across the states and addressing issues that matter to older adults. The editor oversees multiple stories at various stages of production, working closely with fact-checkers and fellow editors to ensure accuracy and quality throughout the editorial process. Building and maintaining strong relationships with staff in both AARP’s national and state offices is essential, as is recruiting and mentoring new freelance contributors. The editor also produces state-specific guides—covering topics such as voting, taxes, and disaster relief—for publication in the Bulletin and online. Additionally, the editor identifies and develops nationally relevant stories for inclusion in other sections of the Bulletin.
Responsibilities
Works with other team members, including writers, editors, project managers, subject-matter experts, marketing and outreach directors, and senior executives to create and deliver timely, high quality, and relevant content for digital, print and other platforms.
Employs digital analytics tools and resources to identify topics of interest to a 50+ audience and to evaluate the performance of content after publication.
Writes and edits content for internal and external audiences and ensures that all content is consistent in voice, tone, and style, and that messaging is customized and aligned for the intended audience.
Enters content into content/publishing management systems or other tracking tools, monitoring workflow, and collaborating with production staff to ensure published content is accurate and high-quality.
Partners with team members to identify success stories. Contributes ideas and content for content and storytelling plans. Identifies and shares opportunities for public and media relations and thought leadership initiatives.
Recommends process improvements related to content development, editing, and delivery of publications/written materials.
May be responsible for assigning and editing content from internal and external contributors, cultivating a network of qualified contributors, and generating contracts, as needed, for external contributors.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of experience as a reporter and/or editor on a journalistic publication/website.
Proven wordsmith, highly creative, in news, service, and explanatory journalism.
Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite tools or similar tools and have experience and competence in digital media.
Top-notch communication and people skills, as the role requires maintaining strong, positive relationships with a wide range of internal and external clients.
