Job Description Purpose: The Director, Clinical Sciences (CS) Communication and Change Management is responsible for developing and leading the Clinical Sciences global business strategy and providing a vision for direct reports to execute CS communications and changes across AbbVie. The director leads an organization that develops and implements global communications and change management activities across Clinical Sciences as well as with partner functions. Demonstrates capability to develop the Clinical Sciences identity and culture. The Director understands the purpose of all CS functions and uses that understating to provide organizational change leadership. The Director combines knowledge of R&D, Clinical Sciences, drug development life cycles and on market activity to drive cross functional alignment and collaboration across AbbVie. Manages various personnel to include exempt, non-exempt and third-party resources. Responsibilities:

  • Leads and develops programs, in partnership with CS colleagues, that drive engagement, in addressing culture feedback across the survey, focus groups and inclusion activities.
  • Accountable for resource planning and allocation of a centralized team of communication and organizational change management professionals that allows the global CS staff to successfully adopt processes, software and organizational changes.
  • Monitors and understands internal and external trends and actively engages team to enable new communication practices and technologies to meet the business needs.
  • Maintains a strong working knowledge of the evolution, business operations, products and services of CS to effectively communicate, interact and influence key internal stakeholder groups on behalf of CS.
  • Leads the strategic planning and execution of CS All Staff meetings and strategic planning sessions. Manages and sets agendas for strategic extended staff forums. Drives follow-up actions across CS functions.
  • Accountable for the effective implementation of business and organizational change projects. Leads aspects of communications and change management strategies and activities through the identification of current and unmet needs. This includes program design, alignment, coordination, implementation and evaluation for change management and related communications initiatives.
  • Establishes the strategy and assesses the priorities of the collaborative visual design work (i.e. portal updates, video production, newsletter creation) aligned to the communication strategies of the organization and key initiatives. Scope of visual design services includes creation of resources for use outside of Clinical Sciences and with partners across AbbVie.
  • Provides Executive Communications Support (which includes visual design support) to VP, CS and members of Clinical Sciences Leadership team and cross functional teams our group engages with. This may include Executive presentations: slides and talking points for all meetings. Videos: script/talking point creation, production, All-Staff Meetings: strategy and logistics planning, RA CS Awards: communications and logistics planning and Strategic Framework.
  • Develops CS organization identity to ensure key stakeholders and customers comprehend the strategy and service offerings from CS. Partners with HR, Public Affairs, and others to enhance CS Culture through management of CS Culture drivers, activities and other communication venues (i.e. All Staff Meetings). Provides oversight and mentoring to CS team members developing key process changes to build continuous improvement culture in CS.
  • Effectively frames complex issues for decision-makers and peers. Prepares and delivers effective management presentations to CS and AbbVie Leadership. Draws upon personal knowledge of business processes, global regulations, organizational improvement methods, and communication mechanisms to propose and design innovative organizational improvements.
Qualifications Required Education: Bachelor's degree in public relations, Integrated Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or equivalent
  • Preferred Experience: Prosci Change Management Certificate or similar preferred Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred
  • Required Experience: 15+ years of related experience. Proven5 + year in a leadership role with strong management skills. 5 years managing people. Excellent communication skills, both orally and written. Excellent business acumen and negotiating skills. Experience working in a complex and matrix environment. Demonstrated ability to lead multi-divisional and multi-functional teams with global aspects.
  • Preferred Experience: 6 years in R&D, 6 years in pharmaceutical, healthcare or regulated industry. 10+ years developing and executing change management strategies or successful project planning and management of highly complex business and technology initiatives. Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical regulations, e.g., FDA and EMA and their impact to organization processes and technology tools Experience serving as a business management consultant.
